Francois Chidaine Touraine Rouge 2014
"From 100% estate biodynamically farmed vines. Known primarily for making some of the greatest white wines in the Loire region, Chidaine has been farming these vineyards for several years. This wine, a blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 35% Cot (Malbec), and 15% Pineau d'Aunis has a bouquet of dark berries and with intriguing nuances of pepper, musky mineral, and forest floor. The palate delivers with excellent structure, lively acidity, and just a bit of grip, weighing in on the high-end of medium-bodied. 2014 was a comeback vintage in the Loire; you can taste it in this wine, with its fully-mature fruit that has crunch and complexity. Chidaine's pure expression shows the Loire's local grape varieties at their best! The grapes in this wine are carefully selected by hand, with fermentation occurring by indigenous yeast in stainless steel tanks. It undergoes a short aging period in neutral oak.Chidaine is a revered winemaker in Montlouis, one who holds the appellation to a higher standard. He has been described by critic Jancis Robinson as a leading producer in the region. He farms organically and biodynamically, and while his wines have been Certified Biodynamic since 2003, he chooses not to mention this fact on the label. The quality of this wine ranks way above its price. It is a wine to drink any night of the week, and my pick for Thanksgiving."
