Pascal Cotat "La Grande Cote" 2013
While we're talking Sauvignon, there are two names that are synonymous with the greatest Sauvignon Blanc made in the world. One is Dagueneau (from the Pouilly-Fume Appellation of the Loire), and the other is Cotat. Tjere is saivignon Blanc, and then there is Cotat. A famous quote about the Cotat domaine is that they what is done in their old-school cellar is "one part winemaking, three parts magic". They have been farming this best vineyard in the town of Chavignol in Sancerre called "Mont Damnes" since WW2. The famous Mont Damnes vineyard (known as the Grand Cru vineyard in all of Sancerre) is so steep in places, that they have to literally slide down parts of it in order to harvest. The soils are like that of Chablis, chock-full-o'-chalky-seashelly-mineral-kimmeridgean-goodness. These are wines that you'll find in the cellars of collectors and wine geeks, and those fortunate enough to visit the domaine consider it to be a religious experience. They are powerful, ripe, glycerin-rich wines that manage to keep an insane amount of "cut" and minerality. I have personally laid these down in my cellar, and they'll last over a decade in the right conditions. Having a Cotat Sancerre, especially an aged one, is "an experience" that everyone should have once. Beautiful to drink now too...
