"What was true then is still so today: for seventy-five years the name Antonio Vallana has meant great Piemontese Nebbiolo, yet their extraordinarily complex, long-lived wines come not from Barolo or Barbaresco but from the region’s other great terroir, the Novara hills of Alto Piemonte. - The Rare Wine Co.
Intense traditionally-made wines that ooze with character."—Robert Parker
Couldn't have put it better ourselves. Vallana is a historic winery that sits in northern Piedmont. North of Barolo (the Nebbiolo producing region that takes all of the spotlight), sits the cooler, more "alpine" territory of peidmont, where the commune of Gattinara reigns supreme. This is also Nebbiolo country (also grown is the indigenous grape called Vesoplina), but stylistically different then it's southern sisters, Barolo & Barbaresco due to it's glacial deposits, high altitude, and mountainous terrain.
I have always loved the wines of Vallana. They are old school, polished but rustic, and are full of soul and character. And often, they release older vintages direct from their cellars, like we have today. I brought a bottle of this over to Le Cafe Cent Dix last week with Eden after work to drink at the bar. We popped, we poured, and we were floored. At almost 20 years old, this is a very special wine aromatically as well as on the palate. Deep, complex, cherry, leather, dried flowers, soft tannins and bright acidity, it's able to transport you right to their ancient cellars in a heartbeat through one sniff.
Since that night we've been selling it off the shelf with fervor, and we've had so much great feedback, that I thought it was time for an email to the masses. Unfortunately, there are only 5 cases left of this beauty, so don't sleep! This is a great opportunity to drink an aged wine at current release pricing!
